Dunedin Hedgehogs, previously named Hedgehog Rescue Dunedin, has been operating since December 2022, with numbers averaging around 30 in care at a time.. This is alot for one person; I have had help in recent months with other carers taking on one or two here and there. I am still getting organised with every aspect of the rescue; my setup and future plans for a better setup, also education and advocacy. Finances are needed to invest in a permanent set up to make this secure for the ongoing service of the rescue and also to make it nicest for the hedgehogs, and easier for myself to maintain. For example, a property that has options for building plenty of small sheds or one large shed with divisions, so everyone who is not in critical care has a spacious area with leaf litter etc. Current situation is not permanent and involves all day laundry etc to maintain indoor hedgehogs, its not ideal. 
Once I have achieved this goal of establishing the rescue as a permanent and happy domain, it will be easy to maintain and I wont hesitate to take on however many hedgehogs need help. That feeling of, oh no, my phone is ringing and being at capacity already..
Alongside this goal, I plan to strengthen the community that I have so far gathered, create ways in which others can be involved, and provide more structure around supporting others to help, for example a complete kit of food and medicines for any new fosters, written and perhaps video material. Funds coming in will cover these ongoing costs of food, medicine, printing of info to circulate, I would love to set up a website; beyond that its the big goal of a property. 

Further down the track, my vision for Dunedin Hedgehogs includes a service of building housing and feeding chambers for people who have garden hedgehogs and wish to provide more support to them. Many lovely people perhaps older or just without time or skill, would appreciate this, and it would also reduce the amount of suffering and emergencies coming in. If funds allow there could be a foodbank situation and people feeding garden hedgehogs could receive any surlplus I have of my preferred foods.
With a website running and a little more action, I hope to temper the misinformation and malignant campaign against hedgehogs and I believe that with knowledge and support, we can have a wonderful report with hedgehogs in New Zealand, and restrict the panic to very specific areas such as coastal where birds nest on the ground. Hedgehogs belong in gardens abundant in snails etc, and with plenty of additional support to enjoy a safe and healthy life.
