These families are diverse - some have escaped family violence, are caring for children with a disability or have a disability, are working or studying. What they having in common is that they make up Australia’s poorest families, with one in three living in poverty. These single mothers are doing their best for their children, but sometimes there simply isn’t enough money to go around. Juggling work and family, paying for living costs, school and other expenses, all it can take is the car to break down, a medical emergency, a big bill for school expenses or the end of a rental agreement and the choice comes down to feeding the family or paying the bills. You can imagine the distress these women feel at being unable to feed their children or provide necessities like heating, transportation and school supplies.
