With estimates of free roaming cats exceeding the human population on the Big Island, a humane solution to controlling their numbers has yet to be implemented. The lives of these cats are grim and generally short because of disease, being hit by cars, and attacks from other animals such as dogs and mongoose. In addition, they can have an adverse effect on the native wildlife, much of which is unique to Hawaii, with many considered endangered species.

Aloha Animal Oasis has a plan to make a dramatic difference in the number of free roaming cats on the Big Island of Hawaii. We're holding monthly spay/neuter clinics for both free roaming and pet cats. Funding for these clinics is 100% donation based. We will be applying for grants in the near future. Our solution is to build a sanctuary that will significantly help control the free roaming cat population while protecting native species and fragile eco systems. The sanctuary will also provide educational programs to encourage responsible pet ownership and add an additional tourist attraction to the Big Island, which will bring in tourist dollars which will allow the sanctuary to operate without cost to HI taxpayers.
