About us
The Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA Rescue NSW) is a volunteer-based emergency service organisation dedicated to protecting life, property, and the environment across New South Wales. Operated entirely by trained volunteers, VRA units respond 24/7 to a wide range of emergencies, providing professional rescue and community support services.
VRA Rescue teams are multi-skilled, attending incidents such as road crash rescues, search and rescue operations, vertical and rope rescues, flood and swiftwater emergencies, animal rescues, and urban search and rescue. They also provide assistance during natural disasters, support police and other emergency agencies, and offer logistical and welfare support during major community events or crises.
All members are trained and accredited to nationally recognised standards, ensuring safe and efficient operations. Training covers first aid, rescue techniques, communications, and incident management. Volunteers come from diverse backgrounds—students, tradespeople, professionals, and retirees—all united by a shared commitment to serve their community.
The VRA works closely with the NSW Police Force, Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Ambulance, the State Emergency Service (SES), and the Rural Fire Service (RFS) to deliver a coordinated emergency response across the state. This collaboration ensures that communities receive the best possible assistance when disasters strike.
Beyond rescue operations, VRA units are active in the community, providing public safety education, event support, and fundraising to maintain essential equipment and training. Most units rely on local donations, grants, and sponsorships to remain operational.
At its heart, the VRA represents the true spirit of volunteering—people helping people in their greatest time of need. Their dedication, professionalism, and community focus make VRA Rescue NSW an essential part of the state’s emergency services network.
