Te Whanganui A Tara Wahine Hunters
About us
Our Wahine Hunters Charitable Trust is dedicated to empowering wahine (women) by teaching them essential diving skills, gathering kaimoana (seafood), and fostering independence through traditional practices. We are committed to reconnecting wahine with the ocean and the skills of our ancestors, honouring Māori values of sustainability and respect for marine life and the environment. At Wahine Hunters, we encourage women to learn and embrace the art of hunting and gathering kaimoana as our tīpuna (ancestors) did, fostering self-sufficiency and a deeper connection to the ocean. We prioritise safety, skill-building, and environmental stewardship, ensuring that each wahine feels confident and knowledgeable in both the waters and the tikanga (customs) that guide our interactions with the ocean.Together, we work to protect and preserve our marine environment, learning responsible harvesting practices to maintain the delicate balance of sea life. Through our Trust, wahine gain valuable skills, build lasting bonds, and contribute to the wellbeing of their families, communities, and ecosystems. Wahine Hunters creates a space for wahine of all backgrounds to thrive, learning together, supporting one another, and carrying forward the knowledge and strength of our cultural heritage.
