We believe that "every time a curtain rises, so does the quality of our lives." In Orem, Utah, in the aftermath of The Great Depression, many residents had lost lifetime investments in farms and homes, and spirits were low. A group of concerned citizens founded SCERA (Sharon's Cultural, Educational, Recreational Association) in 1933, starting with movies in the local high school for $1.00 per family per month. Eventually, by combining all available resources, a town with little financial income raised enough money to build the historic SCERA Center for the Arts in 1941. Contractors donated time and materials and everyone, from housewives to farmers, rolled up their shirtsleeves and pitched in. The humble vision of those founders has created a 91 year legacy of year-round performing arts and arts education across an expanded campus including grand-scale musicals and concerts under the stars at Shell Outdoor Theatre, free history tours at Orem Heritage Museum, and a comprehensive education program in drama, dance, music and visual arts for kids, teens and adults. Hundreds of thousands of people are served each year in Utah County and beyond...a dream SCERA's founders once hoped would become reality. It is our honor to carry on that legacy by keeping the arts family friendly and financially accessible. Please help enrich more lives through the arts!
