Domestic violence has reached epidemic levels in Australia where at least, one woman is killed by a partner or former partner, each week. Of those women who experience domestic violence, more than half have children in their care. Violence against women and their children takes a profound long-term toll on their health and wellbeing. Manly Warringah Women's Resource Centre (MWWRC) is a not for profit community-based service providing crisis accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence. For more than 40 years, Bringa and Delvena Women and Children Refuges have meet the needs of women and children escaping domestic violence and seeking crisis accommodation in Northern Beaches and Lower North Shore of Sydney. Their holistic range of services, including Northern Beaches Family Support Service, aim to provide women and children with the opportunity to thrive and achieve their aspirations in a life free from violence and abuse. Their extensive experience working with the community and families impacted by domestic violence clearly demonstrates that women and children need more than just a roof over their head, following the trauma and impact of domestic violence – they need therapeutic support, counselling, advocacy and community to participate as valued members of the community. Their vision is to ensure women, children and families are safe, secure, connected and provided with the opportunity and environment to thrive and achieve their aspirations.
