Veterinarians have one of the highest rates of suicide - approximately four-times the national average (or around 1 suicide every 12 weeks). They are twice as likely as other health professionals, and up to four-times more likely than the general population to take their own life! Did you know that veterinarians are the equivalent of at least 36 human specialists? And for multiple breeds and species! Despite popular belief, they do not earn a lot of money - in Australia the average wage for a new graduate veterinarian is approximately $50,000pa; and for a more experienced veterinarian the average wage is around $80,000pa. There is no Medicare for our pets, so naturally we notice all the costs on our invoices - yet if you think about it, how much is our Medicare system actually paying for your own health care that you don't have to pay for? There is likely no comparison to the costs of our human care when compared to our animal's care. Our charity's mission is to raise awareness within the community of the factors contributing to the alarming rate of burnout and suicide in veterinarians, reduce the stigma in veterinary professionals seeking help, and provide support in helping them regain their wellbeing and quality of life. After all, if something happened to your believed pet who would you expect to take care of it? We need to look after our veterinary workers because if there are none of them left, how will our pets survive?
