Founded in 1923, The Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA) is the global charity for working animals and the one billion people who rely on working animals for their economic livelihoods. SPANA operates across low-income countries which depend on working donkeys, horses, mules, camels and elephants for the survival of their communities.

The charity’s mission is to transform the lives of working animals and communities through a combination of treatment, training and teaching:

  • We treat animals who are suffering from injury and illness, or facing emergency situations, through our free provision of veterinary care delivered from our network of hospitals and mobile clinics.
  • We train vets and animals owners, promoting best practice and care. As part of this, we also fund research projects that will affect animals and communities around the world.
  • We teach children that animals must be treated with care and compassion through our education program. This involves school visits to veterinary clinics, producing and distributing education materials for schools, and working closely with national education systems to deliver animal welfare lessons.

SPANA is funded entirely by voluntary donations and we rely on the generosity of our supporters to continue our work.
