Medics Against Violence was established in 2008 at a time when Glasgow was recognised as the murder capital of Europe, with a homicide rate double that of our neighbouring countries. As healthcare professionals, we encountered violent injuries in our daily working lives and recognised we required to do more work to prevent them from occurring as opposed to just fixing them when they happen. We could patch up the patients, but the revolving door would continue to bring the same people into our operating theatres and emergency departments time and time again. We knew we could do better. By adopting a public health approach to violence and working in partnership we hope to create a safer Scotland
We run several award winning programmes including MAV Schools, Navigator and Youth Navigator all of which aim to prevent or reduce violence and associated social harms. We’ve been doing this and have seen violence in Scotland reduce significantly but importantly we’ve seen people make huge changes to their lives for the better. With your help we can do so much more.
