Disadvantaged young children attract significant funding from international donors & finding sponsors for them is easy. However, this support drops off when they turn 16 & are no longer so cute! These students are required to leave group homes & fend for themselves. Many have lost contact with families & have little or no support to continuing their education beyond Year 10. They are condemned to a life of poverty as many were lured to 'orphanages' or group homes with promises of better lives, or taken there by families too poor to support them. Most belong to lowest caste in Nepal, further disadvantaging educational access. FONAI targets this group of students for scholarship support. Scholarships are long term, 2 -5 years, so we cap our program to 10 participants, enabling them to complete senior high school & post secondary studies which would otherwise be denied to them. Participants must be born & reside in Nepal & all study must be completed there. We support all course & living costs for duration of the course. Our scholarships include funding vocational training to enable students to find part time work & we continue transition support for up to 6 months after graduation.
