CARMA is an all-volunteer organization and pays no salaries. We work from our homes. 15 community-based chapter in NB & NS raise the necessary operating funds in the community it serves. Ongoing expenses for each chapter include veterinary costs for spay/neuter, vaccines and other medical services, food and secure, weather-proof shelters for free-roaming cats as well as food, litter and other supplies for fostered cats and kittens. The parent organization (CARMA.ORG) works to secure funding for specialized trapping and transfer equipment, volunteer training, promotional materials and special events such as the Community Cat Conference last fall. CARMA chapters face the particular challenges of working in rural and small-town environments in two of Canada’s poorest provinces: indifference to stray and feral cats, a high rate of pet cat abandonment, an ageing population, and failing farms (with cats and kittens left behind). Spring is the critical time for managing community cat populations, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, our Trap-Neuter-Return program is currently on hold. Veterinary services are limited to emergency cases only. Normal fundraising activity is impossible. Still, requests for help come in daily, so we need all the financial help possible
