True Blue Dreaming is unique in that it focusses on mentoring kids in rural and remote areas, in their own communities and where there is evident disadvantage or social exclusion experienced by young people. In the Kimberley, True Blue Dreaming is designed to address the sense of alienation, lack of self-esteem and self-worth and feelings of hopelessness that many young people have reported in various studies. Other rural communities may not face such obvious disadvantage but the risks all teenagers face may be compounded by living in smaller, isolated communities and a lack of social connection. True Blue Dreaming uses young adults as role models and mentors to build meaningful relationships with young people in those communities. The mentors are predominantly University students or post graduate students who are committed to, and passionate about making a difference to the lives of young people who experience social disadvantage. They are the role models that many young people living in remote communities would seldom have an opportunity to meet without a True Blue Dreaming program. True Blue Dreaming programs currently focus on young people in the Kimberley, Pilbara and Wheatbelt regions of Western Australia. Existing programs operate in Derby, Looma, Fitzroy, Halls Creek, Port Hedland, Yandeyarra, Newman, Tom Price, Bruce Rock and Wyalkatchem.
