One in seven people in our Planet do not have access to electricity or clean energy – over 50% live in Africa. Our Foundation is committed “…to be the change …” - to save the life of a man, woman and child dying every 20 seconds as a cruel consequence of living in energy poor conditions. The energy poor in Africa depend on fuels, such as, wood, dung and coal to meet their basic energy needs for cooking, boiling water, lighting and heating. Burning these fuels on rudimentary, primitive stoves or three stone fires creates a dangerous cocktail of airborne pollutants causing serious health problems and death. Of all the threats to life that people in Africa face, it is astonishing that the simple act of cooking is one of the greatest dangers of them all. And the scale of tragedy is enormous: hundreds of millions of energy poor in Africa are currently subjected to this danger. Over 190 million tonnes (520,547 tonnes per day) of CO2 is released annually into the atmosphere as a result of the lack of energy resources for the energy poor. This amount of CO2 is equivalent to the annual output of 41 million motor vehicles which seriously impacts on the quality of our global ambient air which we all rely on to live. The number of deaths from this kind of air pollution currently kills more energy poor people each year than malaria and tuberculosis. By 2030, the number of deaths from carbon dioxide and biomass air pollution will be more than the combined total of deaths from HIV/AIDS, Malaria or Tuberculosis.Energy poverty and its consequential air pollution in our world today is a serious, hidden social and environmental injustice – it is the silent death of women, men, children and planet. On 25 September, 2015 the ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ were agreed to by 193 world leaders at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit 2015, New York. The Sustainable Development Goals go much further than the Millennium Development Goals because they address the root causes of poverty and pledge to leave no person or community behind, including all vulnerable groups. Our Foundation is committed to stop energy poverty and continue to advance its ‘Access 2 Energy’ project, in support of the Sustainable Development Goals, in order to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, modern energy to the poor living in non electrified grid areas in sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, by catalyzing our ‘Access 2 Energy’ project we are dealing with our Planet’s deteriorating ambient air quality and climate change directly contributed to by the energy poor by reason of their current living conditions. Together, you and I have a wider responsibility as human beings living on our Planet – an individual moral and social responsibility to protect our fellow humans and Planet’s ecosystem. We all live in an inter-connected world.
