The Tasmania Canine Defence League Inc.(TCDL), trading as the Dogs' Homes of Tasmania, was first established in 1950. The TCDL is a non-profit organisation caring for Tasmania’s stray, lost and abandoned dogs. The first official Dogs’ Home opened at Derwent Park in 1957. The Devonport Dogs’ Home was established in 1969 and the Burnie Dogs’ Home in 1980. The current Hobart Dogs’ Home at Risdon Vale began operation in 1991. The Launceston Dogs' Home was established in 2019. Approximately 4,000 lost, stray or abandoned dogs pass through the Dogs’ Homes each year. The vast majority are reclaimed or adopted out. TCDL is a Get to Zero (www.g2z.org.au) shelter, aiming to rehome at least 90% of dogs that come in to our care. TCDL operates pound services on behalf of nine councils state wide which means we accept all dogs without judgement. TCDL has a strong foster care focus which is expanding each year and achieving excellent rehoming outcomes. We Are Committed to: Providing the best possible care to all dogs who pass through the Dogs’ Homes. Promoting the dual responsibilities of dog ownership – caring for your dog and caring for your community. Promoting the desexing of dogs. Delivering humane education programs to school and the wider community.
